About FirstInstrumentGuide
We are a research site for parents choosing a first musical instrument. We are not teachers and we do not run a studio, and the rest of this page explains exactly what our recommendations are based on.
Our Mission
Choosing a first instrument for your child shouldn't be overwhelming. We created FirstInstrumentGuide to help parents make confident decisions without wasting money on the wrong instrument.
We've seen too many kids get discouraged because they started with a poor-quality instrument that was difficult to play, or one that didn't match their interests and personality. Our goal is to match every child with an instrument they'll love.
Why Trust Us?
How we research
We are a research site, not a teaching studio, and we think it is worth being plain about that. We have not played every instrument we recommend. What we do is read manufacturer specifications, check current listings, and work through verified owner reviews looking for the problems that show up after a few months rather than on the first day.
What that means for our recommendations
For a beginner instrument, the specifications that matter are unglamorous: whether it holds tune, whether it arrives set up, whether it can be serviced, and whether it survives being owned by a child. Those are things you can establish from specifications and from what owners consistently report, and they are what our picks are based on. Where the evidence is thin or mixed, we say so rather than filling the gap with confidence.
Honest Reviews
We do not accept paid placements, and affiliate relationships do not decide what we recommend. We also do not test instruments ourselves, and we would rather say that plainly than imply hands-on experience we do not have. Our recommendations come from manufacturer specifications, current listings and verified owner reviews, with weight given to what owners report months later rather than on the day it arrived.
Regularly Updated
The music instrument market changes frequently. We regularly update our guides with new products, price changes, and evolving recommendations to ensure you always have current information.
Our Approach
We believe in:
- Child-first recommendations: The best instrument is one your child will want to play
- Honest budget guidance: We recommend across price points and tell you when expensive isn't necessary
- Practical advice: The unglamorous specifications that decide whether a beginner keeps playing
- No pressure: Music should be fun, not stressful
About Our Recommendations
FirstInstrumentGuide participates in affiliate programs, including Amazon Associates. This means we may earn a small commission when you purchase through our links, at no extra cost to you. This helps us keep the site running and continue providing free resources for parents.
Importantly, our affiliate relationships never influence our recommendations. We recommend products based solely on quality, value, and suitability for beginners. Many products we recommend have no affiliate program at all.
