How We Pick Instruments
By Glen · Last updated 2026-10-30
This page describes the process behind the picks on FirstInstrumentGuide, so you can judge how much weight to give them. In short: we research from published specifications, current listings and owner reviews, and we do not claim hands-on testing we have not done.
What we look at
- Stays in tune and plays comfortably. For stringed instruments that means tuner type, scale length, nut width and string action. For keyboards it means key count, key action and whether a sustain pedal input is included.
- Arrives usable. Many budget instruments need a setup before a beginner can play them. We favor models that owners report as playable out of the box, and we flag the ones that are not.
- Right size for the player. Age and height decide the size of a violin, guitar or ukulele, so our size charts come before the product lists.
- Survives real use. We weigh what owners report after several months, not only on the first day.
- Price against the alternatives. We compare each pick with the other options in the same budget and say when spending more, or less, makes sense.
Where the information comes from
Manufacturer specification pages, current Amazon listings, and verified owner reviews. Where a guide cites a standard or a named source, it is listed at the bottom of that guide. We do not invent testimonials, and we do not describe an instrument as tested unless it was.
What we have and have not done
The site is a research site run by a working musician, not a teaching studio or a lab. We have not played every instrument listed. Where a page reflects hands-on experience it will say so plainly; where it does not, it is based on the sources above.
Affiliate links and the word "sponsored"
Many product links are Amazon affiliate links, which pay us a small commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Those links carry a rel="sponsored" attribute, which is the technical label for paid or affiliate links. It does not mean a brand paid for the recommendation. We do not sell ranking positions. If a brand ever pays for a post, it will be labeled as such on the page. The full policy is on the Affiliate Disclosure page.
Prices, stock and updates
Prices change daily, so we show price tiers and send you to the live Amazon listing for the current price. Product links are re-checked for availability on a regular schedule, and when an item goes out of stock we replace the pick or point to a search for the closest alternative. Every guide shows a last-updated date near the title.
Corrections
If you find an error, a dead link or a spec that is wrong, please tell us through the contact page. Corrections are made to the page itself, and we would rather fix it than leave it.
